For this blog, I bring a valuable and key insight that leaders must have awareness which brings a touch of Neuroscience, and it also focuses on leadership clarity and building it successfully in your team.  The evidence of it is a touch insidious because many do not understand this and have this clarity, so it is not understood in many out there.

Key Leadership & Neuroscience Truth that does apply:


Before I bring out the concept, let me offer a couple of aspects about Neuroscience and the involvement.  The reader may remember in other publications where I brought out the Neurotransmitter aspects which are chemicals that the brain releases when it experiences something.  I will remind you of 4:


Norepinephrine – is the chemical that the brain releases when it feels it needs to stand up against and fight or walk away to avoid.


Oxytocin – is the chemical brain releases when it feels socially connected and connected well with others involved.


Serotonin – chemical that the brain releases to make us feel Calm and at Peace.


Dopamine – is the released when the brain only wants applause for itself.


As I mention the key insight, the reader will sense this application so let me begin.  As I do, let me begin by highlighting the very dysfunctional and bad strategy often applied.  I will then mention the better way to clarify it and then successfully build and unify the team.


DYSFUNCTIONAL APPROACH


The central theme is trying to connect with your people but will start with the negative & bad application.  I have observed a number of managers that apply it this way and they misunderstand the negative part of it.  To connect with their people, I have watched a number of managers simply try to tell something funny to get their employees laughing.  The problem with this is that really what they are doing is:


Trying to have the employee use humor to set their Brain and Thinking aside so that they will capitulate with anything the manager says, and the manager can control them totally!


The manager must also remember that every person on your team is different, and they don’t laugh at the same things and their brains can release the Neurotransmitters in slightly different scenarios.  They can often subconsciously experience (not necessarily in truth) that the boss doesn’t care about what you experience or are thinking.

This is the Dysfunctional Approach and let me offer what is truly needed.


THE GOOD and FUNCTIONAL APPROACH


To reach the good goal that the manager is seeking, to really generate positive oneness and synergy in the team, it is not something that is just humor and is not just a minute or two and one time every extended time. It is how you connect with them in an ongoing period, and it is connecting with them often and it is not all humor.  Sometimes it can be just having a short chat and focusing on perhaps some unknown factors coming on scene.


It is knowing your people and connecting them in such a way that you know them and you can build short conversations with them and each one of them feels connected with the leader.  And it also does not shut down their brain to just capitulate and their brain can release perhaps Oxytocin and feel unified rather than Norepinephrine and feeling they must resist or walk away inside. 


I will tell you that in the operation I am involved with in aviation, I make it so people feel value in chatting with me and such and much of the time, I walk by an office and when I see the person inside the office that knows me, I walk up to the door and wave and say hello.  This keeps us connected and we have good professional chats together.


So as a Summary:


Don’t focus on shutting their brain off to simply capitulate with you but take the real time and effort to truly connect with your people and team as a truly ongoing oneness & benefit…Leadership is not about that aspect of having them cave in, but it is more about connecting with them in a realistic way where we are truly deeply together and not just superficially!

It is about truly connecting with your people, not just getting them to laugh and throw their brain aside!


So let me offer you a couple of questions for you to consider as the team leader:


  1. How do you need to apply Good & Functional Approach to Your Team and enhance your team’s application when different members have slightly different insights on the factors, paths and/or goals?


  2. How must you enhance your clarity and true awareness of that Dysfunctional Approach in your leadership and the team?


  3. How must you Truly Model & enhance your Clarity of this Good & Functional Aspect in your team and help them apply this true oneness aspect to experience real synergy and oneness in the brain and experience?
